The idea that Rebuild is some kind of sequel, where all the characters are out of the darkest pit of their downward spiral isn't a bad idea.

Rei was great in the original, but Rebuild did just turn her problems into pure autism instead of total social estrangement. Then again, in the original she becomes less of a character and more of a mouthpiece for existentialism.

Asuka is technically a child and Shinji and Lilith (Rei) were her parents since she came from the LCL in EoE.
