I'm serious. There was so much more emotion in the first series. Danpei's voice acting was really fantastic when it needed to be.
S2 felt dragged out, and the leadup to the final fight didn't really work for me. I just couldn't feel strongly any way about that mexican guy, while Rikiishi and Carlos were powerful characters.

The second series was jarring for me because there were so many sound effects that I recognised from Cobra. Also Dezaki's triple take technique was used far too often; fortunately he toned it down in later shows.

I read the manga but only watched Ashita no Joe 2 and I loved watching that, one of my favorites. I tried watching the first season but couldn't get into it after 2 episodes. Probably because of the shitty quality but I also think that the story the second part covers is more interesting.
