The western anime "industry" is a lot like the gaming media. It's a very small, secluded clique of people circlejerking with companies that license anime for the west. They've been pushing the "moe/ecchi is killing anime" narrative for years at places like ANN because they know that stuff turns off the "mainstream" audience. They were never really relevant in the first place. Most reviewers and critics are 100% terrible by the way, either they barely watch anime but have an extreme political bias they're and they want to push an agenda orthey barely watch anime and are obnoxious fucks about whatever mainstream series they watch touting as the most epic thing ever. There are a handful of decent reviewers who have a real passion but even then there isn't much to say other than you watch the videosand find them informative/entertaining. If they come off as pretentious or if they try too hard to have unpopular opinions about anime they are normally shit.
