Even the weaker last third is arguably stronger in terms of emotional impact than most things i've ever seen.

It improved from ayakashi I think. The story with the entire family raping and beating the girl ending with an edgy gorefest was so over-the-top that I was laughing at the end.
The ship arc was probably my favourite because of how mystical it was.

The ONAs were way more of a mess. If anything people were disappointed by the pace dropping in the second half and the whole situation getting an explanation instead of being vague bullshit.

It's a LN, but there's also a manga adaptation which I haven't seen. The LN itself is only partially translated (volume 1 and most of volume 2 out of 8 total). The anime itself is only 12 episodes and adapts the furthest if I'm not mistaken.

People constantly say underrated when they mean underexposed. I can't remember seeing a bad word said about Mononoke, and I wouldn't say it's not well known either. It's one of my favourites but it's just not the sort of series that can sustain a lot of discussion.
