I disagree. Mai for example is surrounded by multiple girls but I think that she's a good MC. She's likable, doesn't act stupidly, is neither overpowered nor incompetent and she displays both inner conflict and character development over the course of her series.

The second page is him reciting the life he's experienced so far.
A huge dude named jason tortured him by cutting off his toes and sticking a live centipede in his ear, his ghoul regeneration kept him alive but it still hurt.
The book store bit is much earlier than that, he was lured by an attractive woman he admired onto a date then she turned out to be a ghoul trying to eat him, an industrial accident occured that left him with a ghouls organs and it's hunger, hence the "guts mixed up part".
At that point in the story he's bat shit nuts because he has been eating other ghouls.

I guess my problem is when a concept by itself is piquing my interest then there's all sorts of fighting involved, and power levels , or the focus on social character aspect gets buried.
Like Claymore, or Gangsta, other similar things that could ride on being interesting without sinking into power level traps.
It's like some mangaka goes "Then they have these arms and powers" . Trust in the concept alone to be interesting enough without giving in to tropes.
