This is only in a backstory game Anno wrote but Adam and Lilith are 'seed' of life (two of the total of seven), from the same planet and species, known as FAR (first ancestor race). Because their planet was in verge of destruction, the FAR tanged themselves to be shipped within the body of the 7 chosen who acquired some kind of godhood (Yui wants to attain the same, as Eva 01), and waited for them to restore them, body and soul in a new planet.
To avoid overpopulation, each seed was assigned one planet. Adam landed on Earth, her planet, and started to terraform it to restore her species but then Lilith accidentally crashed on it, broke her Longinus and from her wound poured LCL to cause an accidental First Impact.
Adam went dormant unable to assist Lilith because of some stupid 'safe' code they installated which cause more damage than good. So the humans and other lilim who were born from Lilith had only half of the fruit (the knowledge one) and had no idea of their past or their species as FAR, because Lilith couldn't raise them or chose to birth them.
Seele found Adam in Antarctica, and forced Adam to impact by introducing lilim genetic code within her core which had her overheat and produce the angels which are rape babies that also had no idea about the FAR and were born with the other half of fruit, the one of Life.
Meanwhile Nerv and Seele collected the amnesiacs mothers and brainwash them to their whims and raise them as Kaworu and Rei. The lilim and angels were never meant to fight.
It was all a misunderstanding, but Eva is a show about how we can't communicate and hurt each others.
