I'm still loving it even now. I get what you're saying though with the "three" in the manga right now being 'cliche', but it's not like Sorachi isn't totally self-aware of this. I'm very interested in what the end is going to turn out like.
Personally, I find myself caring more about the "serious" arcs of Gintama than most BS in other anime and manga. Through all the comedy you care more about the characters because they're not some trope and they make you laugh. They also keep some comedy mixed in.

I had a friend in school who gave his broken laptop to me when he went back home to Hong Kong. I fixed it up and there was some 100 episodes of Gintama on there with English subs. I selected an episode at random -- something paryodying the release of the Wii -- watched it & laughed my ass off. Slowly worked my way through the lot.
