In all honesty I found this ep boring. Much like the majority of S3. I've tried to lie to myself and enjoy it, but I rewatched S2 and it's so much better. They're removed that spark that made Yuri Yuri great. It's bland in both animation and colour palette. There are no jokes anymore.

This is my biggest disappointment with Namori's writing, she gave these characters hooks for why their relationships were set up the way they were from the start, but she hasn't done anything with those plot points for a while.

It's not just Ayano-Kyouko, it's also happened with Himawari and Sakurako. It's not character development, it's just quietly sweeping the old character motives over the rug. There was no resolution to their arcs, no explanation as to why they act differently now.

This is why Chinatsu is the best, her character from the first episode/volume is continually reinforced even as she develops new relationships. Her relationship with Akari is something that has developed over the series, but she has never stopped fawning over Yui out of nowhere.

They still have most of their base qualities, but some things just fade away with time. The characters in the beginning did not have such clear personalities but a couple of volumes in they are a lot more recognizable. This is very common.

I don't think anyone is claiming that the writing is any sort of amazing. It's a gag series, so it's not like it's too important in the first place. The first chapters were even remade, but that doesn't matter either. They're only excuses for the characters to end up together. I think it's natural for their introductions to be stronger.
