Rest in peace, Mizuki Shigeru
>>
>>134151695
Why so many deaths lately?
>>
>>134151794
A lot of them have just been ancient.
>>
>>134151794

Japanese winters don't mess around.

Frankly I'm surprised he lasted this long. Look at him. He still drew manga at his age.
>>
>>134151695
Fuck, I love Kitaro and I recently read the 3 volumes of Showa: history of japan, and bought NonNonBa not too long ago. He had a tough life, but was destined for manga.

He will get to go explore the afterlife now though, so that is pretty awesome
>>

;_;7

Did he actually finish his latest autobiographical work? I thought it was finished and then I thought it might have been continued.

>>134152377
Well he outlived Tezuka and others by the mere fact he got his proper sleep. He probably called them fools for shortening their lives like that, although the fact that Tezuka didn't sleep so much meant that he probably spent just as much time awake than someone much older.

I guess it's time to read Showa.
>>

Haven't read Showa yet since it wasn't completely released yet. You should probably read Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths first just because it's a standalone volume.

Ah, man.
>>
Not long after Setsuko Hara too. Both will live on in their works. I'm currently reading Mizuki's Showa: A History of Japan. He has a great way of juxtaposing important historical events alongside moments of his life from his childhood onward. The books are so much more enjoyable than if they had just been straight facts. Mizuki will be greatly missed.

You know, part of it might just be that a lot of /a/ can't be fucked to do anything that isn't just torrenting and watching anime, but I feel like there's some stigma towards older pre-80s works, that they might be simpler or more infantile, and the stylized Disney/Tex Avery-esque appearance of some of the art(e.g. Tezuka's) might aid in that, but honestly, a lot of the Cold War-era stuff by some of the oldest mangaka of note might be some of the best stuff ever written in the medium.

>Mizuki Shigeru posts a lot of food pictures. This isn’t really anything amazing–lots of people post food pictures. But after translating Showa: A History of Japan, I have a much better perspective on his absolute adoration of food.

>This is a man who almost starved to death, and watched people starve to death all around him when he was stationed on Rabaul island. Food has a deeper meaning to him than I think any of us can understand. One of the lines of Showa that really stood out to me was when his character Nezumi Otoko is explaining the lack of food, and he looks to the audience and says:

>“I don’t think you modern readers can really understand how terrible it is, to have no food. Starvation is more than just an empty stomach. Hunger eats away at your soul. You slowly succumb to despair until you can’t see any hope in the world.”

>Keep that in mind when you look at this picture. Sure, on the one hand it is a funny picture of a great genius having fun with something as mundane as a McDonald French fry. On the other hand it is a picture of a man who knows more than most people the actual connection between eating and being alive, and who embraces every bite with a gusto we will never know.

I think that's generally true for any medium. Lots of people can't be bothered to watch older movies or books. They are right in the sense that only a few older works would have something to make them still resonate to modern generations, but I think sampling some older stuff is still useful in getting a general idea of how things have changed.

What's this?
>>
>>134154948
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Mizuki
>>
>>134152377
There was a major geopolitical event which pruned all the low-hanging fruit.
>>
>>134154350
Are these TL'd?
>>
>>134153376
Yes, if you are a bit ignorant of why exactly the attack on Pearl Harbor happened then it does a great job of showing you how Japan was leading up to that moment along with showing the era in general from politics to Mizuki's own life at the time.
>>
>>134154943
And how often was Shigeru's work discussed on /a/ prior to today?
>>
>>134154559
I started watching the original Getter Robo today.
Looks like complete garbage and the sound is pure ear rape, but the sheer amount of charm just keeps pulling me back in.
>>
>>134154998
yeah but literally who is he? he has no relevance to /a/ or the anime/manga industry
>>
>>134154995
The bottom panel is an announcement for Kitaro's anime adaptation (probably the first). Not sure about the top one.
>>
>>134154983

That's what the report button is for.
>>
>>134155003
Yeah they're the scans of the official English translations. I forgot which company did them.
>>
>>134151695
2015 has been one hell of a year
>>
>>134155013
Whenever Toei decides to make a new Kitaro anime. /a/ was here for the last 2, you know? And we had many nice threads about them at the time.
>>
>>134155043
Thanks!

Stickies are a sigil for the spirits of the dead to go to and pass on so they do not haunt the living
>>
>>134155019
>he has no relevance to /a/ or the anime/manga industry
He has every relevance to /a/ and anime/manga. He's almost as important as Tezuka to this industry.
>>
>>134155043
Drawn and Quarterly did them along with Tatsumi's and a few others
>>
>>134154972
I said barely cares, not hate. Like, aside from the mistake memes, there's little actual discussion of Miyazaki or Ghibli, but you just know that when he dies there'll be a huge burst of both shitposting and crossboarders whose only exposure to anime is Miyazaki.
>>
>>134155019
Here's your reply.
>>
Wow I can't believe this nigga who was older than baseball died.

And he made so many good anime and mangoes too
>>
For the longest time I thought he traced his backgrounds, but nope, he actually drew them with the and that he wasn't drawing with originally.

Drawn and Quarterly.
>>
>>134155074
It's cute that you believe that, but no.
>>
>>134155078
Oh, then yeah. It'd be more that a culturally significant figure in the industry passed away, more than anything
>>
>>134155112
Mizuki is in the same ballpark as Ishinomori and Yokoyama
>>
>>134155104
/a/ is the only board I browse or have ever browsed believe it or not, except for that one time I clicked on /c/
>>
>>134155112
>It's cute that you believe that, but no.
Yeah, comapring him to Tezuka may be pushing it a bit, but Mizuki has had quite a bit of influence on manga and anime.

you're going to see a lotttttt of tributes to him by innumerable mangaka over the next few days

Depends if they are cancer then yes. Also not everyone gets it, its a 50-70% chance of dying to it.

It isn't?

To /a/, but not to anime or manga.
>>
>>134155175
Yeah f@m, you're right, it means nothing to /a/ because /a/ is full of children who only care for seasonal anime and generals and they only did old manga, which haven't gotten any adaptations recently

A huge loss.

.
>>
>>134155242
No, Kyoani is more important to anime and manga as well

I feel like this is a more important death than the voice actress that died weeks ago. Sure, she was in her 30s and died of pneumonia but her legacy's not that impacting.

She also expressed her desire to live on social media shortly before her passing

There is no 'more important death' anyways, Mizuki was leagues more important than her to anime/manga but their deaths are both things to be mourned over, without doing any balancing acts trying to figure out how important they are so as to figure how hard should you react

I don't think he did. He was a really easygoing guy who had no clue what he was doing in the first half of his life. If anything he hated the tight-assed officers from his own army who refused to surrender to the enemy and ordered nonsensical suicide charges.

So many untranslated works by him. What's your favorite?

I can for sure say diet. All my family member who died of old age (with diseases and health problems i guess) died in their 90s. We just eat a shit ton of peas, beans, rice, and vegetables. Meat only once a week.
>>
>>134155720
I'm guessing he didn't realize the title was Peanuts. I'm sure he's at least seen Snoopy before.
