Pretty much this. Most anime will be done in, live 2d or cgi (which after watching Etotama my fears have been quelled a bit).
That said, one trend I've been noticing is really detailed eyes. Gakkou Gurashi is a pretty good example from this year, but another even better example would be Valkyrie Drive. If you haven't taken a good look at the eyes in VD, I suggest you do because they are over designed as shit and it seems more and more anime are doing this. I guess when the most defining feature for talking heads are the hair and eyes, and with hair being less and less exaggerated than it was in the 90's/00's the focus of embellishment has moved to eyes.
