I started watchign Ghibli movies this summer and I love them. I don't know what it is but unlike Disney animated stuff, there is zero cringe inducing kiddie dialogue. Totoro is the most g rated, kid oriented one and I still loved every second of it.

I know this will be controversial but, what do you guys think of Miyazaki's statments regarding anime and otakus?
I hate to admit this but I think he's right. the people who make anime too often are antisocial otaku who don't understand human emotion and likewise their characters are only appealing and likable on a superficial and sexual level.

you know I'm right. any time i visit /a/ half the threads are some moe anime with lesbians in them, precure, yuri yuri, valkyrie drive.

What's wrong with Precure?
What's wrong with lesbians?
Kaguya Hime = Omoide poroporo >>>> everything else > shit > Ponyo

I'm just saying a lot of modern anime seems to be very much geared towards fan service and has similar plots, characters, etc. I'd like something that wants to be successful because it has a good story, compelling characters, not how much nudity, softcore lesbians and sex you can shove in. And this is basically why Hayao hates modern anime.

hmm, of the ones I've seen so far I rank it like this
Spirited away>Castle in the sky>Kiki's delivery service=Grave of the fireflies=Tonari no totoro>Mononoke hime=Naussicca>Porco rosso>Howl
for me though Howl was the only one i didn't like, it felt like spirited away with an incoherent plot.

Porco Ross, it has a lot of charm to it.
And whisper of the heart is really comfy, looks fantastic on a 1080p tv.
These films bring me to a whole other world.

I really like the versatility of these movies. Grave of the fireflies and totoro were the same year and one is about 2 Japanese kids starving to death at the end of WW2 and the other is two sisters play with a fluffy cat spirit.
I really do love the worlds created.
