There needs to be some way for us to use that time usefully, rest our brain but still be active.

Wasn't this schedule proven to be bullshit? Why are people acting as if this is what happens to every mangaka, every day?
>>
It's probably not as bad as people put it. When they think "work" they think manual labor or shit they don't like doing.

But when you think of it as doing something they love for a job which is drawing almost all day and they have assistants to mess around with then it aint that bad actually.

Because most of that time is filler spent fruitlessly. If you've ever worked in Japan you'd know that japs spend more time trying to look busy than actually doing work.

There are very few Odas in manga. Most are Kubos who spend 20 hours a week on their manga and have their assistants fill in the blanks.

>>133966199
Bullshit. I have recently done both and you're full of shit. The only way you could think that is if you're so stupid that thinking makes your brain literally hurt.

Or, what you call "physical labor" was some bitch-tier shit like changing printer ink or something.
>>
>>133966199
Get real for a second, ever done physical labor?

Come back when you've had to be in charge of 20+ guys on a project, you still have to chug around heavy shit on your feet as well as keeping check and managing other peoples shit for 6 hours a day. The other 3 you still need to help plan out and account for everything that's happening on site.

Physical labor does not rule out intellectual work you know.
>>
>>133964393
This looks a lot like a SPESS MUHREEN schedule.
>>
>>133966199
It depends on what that 'creative' and 'intellectual' work is. A manga wouldn't be creatively draining 100% of the time since you're constantly switching up into less creatively intensive phases. I mean, inking and actually drawing out the pages would not be as bad as say, drawing a fuckton of concept art non-stop. The planning of your pages is only a small portion of the work, then you get into auto-pilot while drawing.

Also, being creatively drained is only bad if you wanted to do something creative in your time off. If your off-time is just lounging around and do nothing with your brain, it's not going to feel anywhere near as punishing as physical labour. If you wanted to do creative stuff in your downtime you'd feel like you were hell though, for sure. Very circumstantial.
>>
>>133964393
Does he also pay for doing his job and getting published, or at least earns some money?
>>
>>133966479
>brain literally hurt.
I never said that. I just find doing a good job on 'art' more stressful than roof tiling or laying bricks because I actually give a shit about my art.
>>
>>133966199
Think about it for a second. If someone was doing this exact same workload at a construction site, factory, mine, a farm, shipping/fishing, or working a trade they would probably be hospitalized from exhaustion within a week. Not even Chinese sweatshops are that bad.

That kind of workload for physical jobs is borderline illegal in most western nations.

There is a difference between mental exhaustion from creative/intellectual/cube drone work and physical exhaustion from physical labor.

One fucks up your brain and body in the long term like what happens to a lot of mangaka who die 50-60, while the other does the same but will straight up kill/permanently cripple you by the time you're 25.
>>
>one hour to breakfast and lunch.

Fucking casuals, you eat while you work.

Also Toriyama did most of his work on the weekends and the rest of the week screwed around.

Yeah overall, Mangaka like in the OP are just not good enough
>>
>>133967172
>while the other does the same but will straight up kill/permanently cripple you by the time you're 25.
Not the guy you're talking to, but I will point out that some artists cripple their hands beyond repair by the time they're 25. Artists are fully capable of crippling themselves by overworking. I know because someone in my family is an artist who overworked themselves to the point of broken hands by the time they were 25 and they haven't even been able to open a fridge door or even a jar for the last five years. I've had to do it for hem. They're 30 now. I laughed about it at first, because who breaks their hands from drawing? But holy God, I didn't know these things could happen.
>>
>>133967454
I've never heard of that but sure.

Although, how the fuck do you break BOTH your hands from drawing? Who fucks up their good hand/wrist and decides to do the exact same shit again on the other? And this was when they were 25? That's a short timespan.
>>
most authors have a large group of assistants.
>>
>>133967454
I've never heard of anyone destroying their hands from drawing.

Carpal tunnel, chronic sprains, inflammation of joints, bone spurs, etc. yeah. But nothing so debilitating that they couldn't use them like with a spinal injury or bleeding lungs from inhaling too much iron dust.
>>
>>133967620
Taught themselves everything they needed to while they were in school, so overworking and always drawing before even getting a job. Then got a job in the industry around 20 or so. Pretty much worked 5 years, non-stop. Barely slept, barely ate, severe workaholic. One hand got fucked so instead of stopping, they swapped over to their other hand in order to keep going. Doctors made it sound like it was a just a minor injury that would heal if she stopped using her injured hand for a bit. But it never healed, it always got worse. Then the left hand got just as fucked as the right, but she still didn't take a break because she had work that had to get done.

She was pretty thin to begin with, which probably didn't help with whatever the hell happened with her. Doctors now have no idea what to do with her, but her hands are undoubtedly fucked and no doctor seems to be giving her advice that helps. She can't use her hands at all. She tries sometimes, but she even drops dishes if she tries to hold things, etc.

What you doing called managing and not physical labor.
If you in charge of 20+ guys and still need to work physically you are a shit manager, or your boss is a shit. Or both.
No shit sherlock you'll die out of exhaustion on this work. But that's just you work terms are that bad.
Try to ask other people, who do the same job as you.
You either work with your hands or with your mind, it's one of the most important rules of an organisation.
>>
>>133967778

In the future, they can work their hands to ruin and have them cloned or replaced with cybernetics. Also normal medicine may be able to prevent all of those from becoming too much of an issue.
>>
>>133964393
This chart sums up how the japs are so efficient.

Not so much the long hours but how it is so planned out and embed into the culture.
>>
>>133966479
Physical labor is so much less exhausting. I did interior renovation (offices, hospitals etc) for several years and it was super clear cut and simple. We go to work at a set time, perform a bunch of fairly simple manual labor, leave at a set time, I get paid by the hour and my free time is mine.

Creative work, especially when it involves problem-solving, is so different. I go home, but I never truly stop working. There is no real free time. Whether I want it or not, I constantly end up thinking of the project I'm working on, and try to figure out what's the best way to solve whatever design or technical issue I'm facing.

I'm blessed that I have an interesting enough job to constantly give me something to think about, but it's also a curse because it consumes me so completely that I can't productively do anything else.
>>
>>133967353
That's not how you get proper nutrition.

If you eat a proper meal you'll be more efficient in actual work hours.
>>
Is this the same meme as Japanese workers working 12 hour days but only doing 2 hours of work during them and wasting so much time to appear as if they are dedicated to the company?
>>
>>133973616
Isn't being efficient doing something without any waste?

His work schedule is literally the epitome of insufficiency if he has 3 hours of downtime when not sleeping.
>>
>>133973843

>>
>>133966544
If you're managing and still having to do the actual labor you're a shit manager or the people above you aren't hiring enough people because your/our economy is fucked.
>>
>>133973908
I mean if he was efficient he'd have much more free time because he'd be doing his work more efficiently.
>>
>>133964393

>>
>>133973963

This is literally the definition of being inefficient.
>>
>>133964393
Do people believe this is their actual schedule?
so gullible
>>
>>133973170
She's gotten all kinds of treatment from many different doctors though. Just, none of them have worked. Most things aggravate it and make it worse. I have no idea of the specifics of what's going on, but doctors, and she's seen countless doctors, have said it's not tendinitis or carpal tunnel or arthritis or anything obvious like that. She ended up in the state she's in not because of doctors but because she was stubborn and wouldn't stop chasing after her busy worklife schedule when she was clearly in pain and should have taken a break.

Are we just thinking differently about this? Do you think if someone overworks themselves willingly because they're so consumed by deadlines that it's different than other workplace injuries?

Depends on where you're working. If it's an office building or something (at late or early hours), where you don't really come into contact with many people, then it's not taxing at all.

Being a janitor at a mall or shopping outlet is pretty shitty, especially when you run into people that you knew in high school. Those are sales numbers.
It's rumoured that Oda pulls in over 2 billion yen annually, with Toriyama not far behind, while a lot of the other big names like Kishimoto, Arakawa, etc. make 3 to 5 million.

The Japanese make a habit of making tax information for millionaires public, so there's a fair amount of information out there for the whales.

If he's doing what he enjoys (drawing/writing); that pretty much is free time.
>>
>>133966131

Supposedly. It's highly controversial. (and needs more research because if true it's incredible)

I personally just get 6 hours of sleep a day.

That turns the 100 or so hours of awake time you have into 126. So, for example, if you're working 50 hours a week, you're not working 50% of your awake time, whereas with the 8 hour sleep schedule you would be.

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Accept the fax.

Millionaire status is determined by net worth, so you can easily be a millionaire while making less than $1m per year.

Those are sales numbers, as in number of units (tankoubon) sold. The actual revenue would be some number higher than the sales number (average price * number units sold). The cut the author gets from the publisher most likely varies.

OP's chart is bullshit, and this thread is full of the usual unsourced "animation is hell" titbits, there's some truth to all this. Animators get barely any pay and are overworked pretty much to death. All to keep up with foreign market and prevent animation work being outsourced overseas or replaced by 3DCG. Even their union is more concerned with ensuring job stability rather than raising the working conditions to something resembling legality.
This is the source for almost all QUALITY and the fact that animation style has gotten a lot more streamlined and simple over the years (e.g. dot noses). But it's very important you don't feel pity for these people. They actively chose to be part of this industry, and they choose to keep working despite these conditions. They're delusional obsessive autists who'd rather work for meager pay 80 hours a week if it means they get to draw 2D girls for a living.

By no longer watching anime and quit reading manga.
By deserting our waifus and find wives.
By abandoning lolis and claim christmas cakes.
By quitting 4chan and starting a real life.
By leaving behind Moot and being introduced to Mr. Poole.

But that is a price too steep to pay and the sacrifices we must make too big.

If anything, Japan would be better off if it allowed some foreigners (or some foreign IDEAS) in. It's been stagnating for like 30 years, their corporate culture can't compete in the modern world and the entire country is in desperate need for major reform.

Except they haven't. They underwent two major waves of modernization (late 19th century and mid 20th century), each followed by decades of stagnation and even regression.

>It hasn't been more than 2 decades since half the electronics in your house would be Japanese designed
Yeah, that "sony TVs errywere" fantasy was correct 2 decades ago, but Japan neither designs nor produces shit in the 2010's.

>Japan competes directly with other Asian countries whose corporate cultures are even more ass backwards than theirs
For every engineer Japan trains, Korea produces 5 more and China produces 20 more. And unlike Japanese engineers, Korean and Chinese engineers aren't hammered in by idiotic conservatism and awful employment conditions.
And you might say what you will about the quality of those Chinese engineers, at least their boss is one who knows how to make the right calls and manage their workforce. Better that than some retarded gook who screams at his employees to produce better results and is more concerned with maintaining a facade of group cohesion than generating any actual teamwork.

Damn I have a hard time believing that schedule. Speaking from experience, I can't believe a human can maintain that for even a week. The one and only reason I was able to is drugs. Massive amounts of amphetamines and caffeine non-stop for over 5 years. Got to the point I stopped paying rent and moved into my office/car. Slept in my chair during those moments when amphetamines wear off and your head just hits the table. You wake up due to discomfort in 1-2 hours, pop more amph, and continue. It's what I imagine hell is like.
