Back in Adventure he was a 6th grader with a sense of obligation to protect his juniors. The whole Digital adventure never ended up affecting his schooling and the one glimpse we see of his academic ability shows he's not that smart.
Then 02 comes along and you know what happens? Everyone decides to leave it up to the new kids. All of his friends basically say it's okay to put this stuff aside and let them do it. Sure, they lend a hand every now and again but that once again never interrupts his studies. Everyone's basically told him "It's okay to put your studies first" for YEARS.
Now we're at Tri. The pressure is on. His grades haven't improved, his parents are probably breathing down his neck and now Digimon are appearing again? Well, it's not HIS problem because everyone already agreed that they should just leave it up to the people more adept/suited at handling it. Everyone's an adult now pretty much. They'll manage without him.
His current character is filled with doubt about his own abilities. Jou probably even believes that he's more a liability now. I mean if he can't even manage to fulfill the promise he made as a kid to himself, what could would he be fighting Digimon?
This is why I'm happy with Tri, because it's doing what made the original Adventure good and what made 02 fail. The characters are HAVING ARCS AND DEVELOPMENT. They might not be the deepest but they're there. I want to see Jou succeed. I want to see him self actualize and accept his flaws. I want to see him get called out.
I mean fuck, Mimi's probably going to be the one who does it. She'll be the one to voice our complaints. She'll be the one who asks where the Jou who chose to stay with her when she couldn't fight anymore went OR she'll be the one who tries harder while fighting BECAUSE of what he did for her when she couldn't.

Tri put the romance at the forefront by blatantly displaying Koujiro's crush on Mimi, Takeru and Hikaru talking about Takeru's girlfriends, and Mimi teasing Sora about Taichi and Yamato.
None of this included any actual development, of course, but all this teasing from the get go hinted that the matter of romance will be more relevant going forward, and I'm sure the following movies will bring along actual development.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not expecting romance to be the main thing. The main thing in Digimon is always friendship. Still, romance will probably be more relevant in Tri than it was in any other Digimon series.

With the Ultimates finally getting some proper screentime and so many people watching Tri, I'd say it's an inevitability, but I honestly don't know. Hunters was basically a MotW placeholder series. For a last minute fan service crossover, it wasn't so bad.
Also Xros Wars had sone of the best songs out of the franchise and introduced an interesting concept of evolution which we had seen before earlier in Children's War Game. Remember Omegamon? He's basically a Digi Xros. He isn't a jogress but a gatai which is basically a Digi Xros.
