I love Homura and all, but to be honest, her self loathing kind of pisses me off sometimes. I get why she's like that, and I agree that the story would make a lot less sense if she was written any differently, so the writers really didn't have much of a choice. But still, all she's done thus far is try and make a better life for those she cares about, even if it means destroying herself in the process. Madoka may be the most dominant reasonby farfor Homura doing what she did, but I think there's still some part of her that cares for her other friends'Mami, Sayaka, Kyokowell beings. She only tried and wound Mami during the incident with Bebe, and rather than kill Sayaka outright when confronted at the end (or wipe her mind clean and have her do her bidding), she just took some of her memory away, and left her to live a happy life with Hitomi and Kyosuke still alive.
Everything she's done so farwith maybe one or two exceptionswas for the benefit of others. She literally cursed her own soul, let it turn black, and condemned herself as the devil just so Madoka and her friends could live happily. Honestly, from a moral standpoint, she's one of the best examples of "good" in anime IMO, considering everything that's happened to her.
And yet, she believes she's the most wretched being in the universe, calls herself Evil incarnate, and hates herself so much that she has her Familiars pelt her with tomatoes, calling her "Good-for-Nothing". Like I said, I understand completely why, psychologically, she thinks of herself that way, but seeing good people call themselves bad just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Well, assuming it happens following the third timeline Madoka would already have quite a lot of karma. Enough to have Kyubey pester her nonstop until she gets in the fucking robot. On one hand, you could argue that, dealing with everyone not believing her warnings about Kyubeyon top of watching them die horribly, along with having everything she's ever loved and cared about torn apart in front of herover and over again (at least 100 times, I think), she's grown desensitized and indifferent to everyone but Madoka. This would certainly explain her cold exterior.
On the other hand, you could argue that there's still a bit of her left that remembers the firstor even secondcycles, where Madoka's friends accepted and welcomed her. You could say that, while small and faint, Homura still has some part of her that cares for someone besides Madokamicroscopically small and ghostly faint when compared to how much she cares about Madoka, I'll admit, but still there. This would not only explain why she only wounded Mami when she fought her, but also why she allowed them to keep their free will and live as they please, despite the fact doing so poses a threat to Madoka regaining her God form. Sure, she took away part of their memories, but let's be honest. They're going to catch on that something isn't right about the world eventually. When that happens, the dominoes are going to fall.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Homura cares for her other friends as much as she cares for Madoka, not at all. It'd be like comparing the mass of the Sun to that of a baseball. What I'm saying is that, while minusculeat best, there's still a tiny fragment left in Homura that wants Madoka's friends happy, not for Madoka's sake, but for their own.
Of course, I could be wrong. It could go one way or the other IMO.

This post in itself really hit the point of the whole show. The only thing i would add is the largest theme pushing this story along is self sacrifice. Madokas repeated sacrifice of herself to save everyone in every timeline ending up with her becoming Madokami and Homuras sacrifice of literally all of her happiness in order to secure that of Madoka. In Homuras eyes the only way to save someone bent on sacrificing themselves is to sacrifice yourself even harder. She cant find a happy ending and hates herself for it so she embraces it in the hope that in doing so she can save Madoka. While she might look out for the others a bit its still a byproduct but even that shows she still cares. She isnt heartless just jaded.
As far as Homura being happy though its not possible in the current situation. Another rebellion tier movie or series that jumbles everything again is required and some real thought would have to be put into it to make it not seem like an asspull.

In Rebellion she avoided a fatal pitfall and basically bought herself more time, but she's not out of it yet.
