Basically it has to be in mid-late December 0079 because there are Gelgoogs in the manga, and those barely entered production before A Boa Qu. You could already guess it was very late in the war because Rick Doms were introduced pretty late and the FA-78s were not finished in time to see combat; the fact that there is one in operation at all in Thunderbolt is already kind of pushing the canon to me.
Then again the timeline of the OYW is really fucked up in how everything important with the war/anime etc got squished into the span of only a few weeks; it's easy to see authors just disregarding that shit.

The Crossbone Gundam is fucking weird. It has beam fist weapons (zanbers I think they're called?), little extendable rope lines etc.
Basically that entire series is weird as fuck though too, I mean there are ships with fucking beam sails; it very much doesn't even feel like proper UC canon at points yet somehow picks up where F91 left off.

This is thunderbolt, not crossbone.
But yeah, crossbone was popular. Its one of the few late UC series, has a great lead gundam design made by a popular mechanical designer, a couple of nice fights, and Tobias the mc goes from complete nub to monster by thr end.

Its used by a group of "space pirates". Its pirate theme is part of a disguise so people don't immediately recognize it as the F97 gundam.
But both bf and try being energy monsters is wrong. The crossbone was fuel efficient and its main feature was the powerful yet articulated thrusters on its back which were designed for efficiently moving around Jupiters heavier gravity.

The manga has no homo. both of the MC have a waifu.The EF MC's waifu gets shot by her own subordinate who's been pissed off with her the whole series and was furious that she wasn't staying behind to go down with the ship as captain when it was being evacuated. The Zeon's waifu is kind of fucked in the head.
