Ugly? No. The only QUALITY in the TV series were the rare distant objects which they didn't expect people to be able to see clearly. The low budget resulted in cheap/nonexistent animation. The artwork itself is beautiful.
Rewatch episode 13 in 1080p. It has a lot of panning and shaking paintings, but they have better artwork that you'd get out of any modern action anime. WebM not related.

The movie's only redemming quality is that the cinematography is well handled, and that it does look very good at times, usually when not a ton of movement is going on. I think Wyald was pretty crucial to the storytelling despite going so over the top. Aside from easing Guts into fighting apostles (and let's not kid ourselves, the absurd mosnter battles are an integral part of Berserk's appeal), it introduced Griffith to the idea that if he chucks his humanity, it doesn't matter how broken his body is. He'll go straight to the top of the food chain.
Being disgraced in front of his soldiers only does so much. Griffith has to start thinking about how he could fix it, and how anything less means he'll get trampled by the very real monsters in his world. Without that shit festering in his mind, he's just another dick who betrays everyone.

I don't know. I guess that's the same story told over and over in different ways, and that would definitely be an exception. Lower form of storytelling imo. Who-done-its and mystery oriented stories can get away with that more easily. But, for example, Berserk isn't that kind of story, and can't do that without ruining itself. What would Berserk be if it ended up being 100 reboots of the moth apostle chapter, or the sea god chapter.
I like how Guts' sword is so damn big that it causes a 2-page spread whenever he draws it. That's the real power of the Dragonslayer, not all that astral realm stuff.
