Considering this is supposed to be an anniversary project intended as fanwank material and pandering to nostalgiafags, you'd expect them to try to at least lead things off with a bang. the animation quality is woefully mediocre, and even worse, they fuck it up with 3d cell shaded models during evolution sequences too
the story so far is boring, which, being the intro of a 6 film series might just be understandable, but its also bad. despite clearly acknowledging that 02 was a thing, no one wastes a single thought about the 4 other digidestined that apparently have been beaten in the digital world already.
it makes no sense they wouldn't at least check in with them during all of this (and i guess finding out that they're all halfdead will be a really surprising twist in movie 2 or 3)
then, tai somehow lost his bravery which ok, can happen, but then, his weird thought process of 'fighting = destruction = potentially harming people = i wont fight the digimon that will, without intervention, clearly cause much much more harm and destruction' and his stupid revelation at the end of this first part took way too long and just made no sense whatsoever.
then, suddenly, as always, agumon and gabumon end up making it all the way to megalevel and even fusing, without any transformation animation and without any good reason to be honest, other than 'well thats plotstuff and so we're doing this'
then, they completely ignore their canon where, when weak digimon are hit by strong digimon attacks, they get deleted. well, those champion level digimon sure can take a whole lot of strong mega level moves without any problem.
i already forsee that none of the other kids, save for the new character, will end up getting their digimon to mega level for a change.

we learned about the protagonists, their relationship and general attitudes.
we learned about the digital world and the digimon in it, and about the main digimon characters too.
we learn about the concept of evolution and have our first champion evolution and death battle by episode two.
we learn more about matt and his little brother as well as that digimon have real feelings too by episode three when, again, everyone almost dies during the night.
finally, episode four is the meramon one, where we run into a digimon village and first learn about the mysterious black gears turning digimon angry and evil.
and thats in a show that actually had good reason to spend some time explaining stuff. becaus back then, hardly anyone knew anything about digimon.
unlike today, when the show has had new iterations on the air almost constantly.
