I feel like everything but the religious cult was within my grasp throughout Punpun. What was it supposed to represent?

Pun Pun? More like 1st world problems: The Manga: Teen Angst Edition

Cults are really common in urban and suburban Japan. It was a fad in the west, too but died with the 90's. It just never really went aware they and they have tonnes of dangerous cults constantly going door to door, handing out flyers at community centers and making telemarketing phonecalls fishing for converts. They offer easy answers to life's hard problems through pseudospiritual bullshit and people with actual issues flock to it like honey, get caught up in the sense of community and rationalizing ideology and let it warp their view of the world.

The 'spiritual' stuff in Punpun is basically just satirizing all of that.
>>
>>133737453
Was thinking there'd be more to it than that, but maybe you're right.
>>
>>133737453
They actually saved the world
>>
>>133737622
The concept of god is used by Punpun and the poor kid to make sense of their bad circumstances, so it could just be an unnecessarily elaborate continuation of that.

I dont remember this part

Replacing objects and events with others yeld a question as to why they are done in the first place.

God = Darkness
Cult = Escape
The Book = Ideal world (happiness)
Punpun = ?
Akiko = ?
The strange faces in the first 20 chapters = ?

It was an acceptable read.

I saw the cult and pegasus as unessesary until the very last scene when it slighty made sense.

Read the interview numbnuts. The mangaka thought it was a funny random thing, it had no meaning other than being fun for the guy.

I'd be a liar if I said that didn't lower my opinion of the story a bit. I was anxiously waiting for some untold prophecy to spring forth on the foretold day, and the whole thing was just a load of shit?

No self-respecting author ever explains the meaning of their own work. Doing so is basically admitting, publicly, that your finely crafted work of artistic expression is too convoluted, esoteric or unclear for the average reader to draw meaning from it. In general, "what did X mean?" is a terrible question to ask in an interview and 9/10 times the creator will respond "I didn't really mean anything by it." By which they mean "the reader can come to their own conclusion rather than just using my words, and you can fuck right the hell off for asking me to explain it."

And on top of that, even if the author meant nothing by it, that doesn't mean that searching for meaning in it is pointless. A reader's interpretation of a work tends to be far more important than the author's intention when creating it. Author intent is like the lowest rung of credibility when it comes to interpreting or critiquing. If theirs is the word of god, then you ought to be a secular reader.

Summed up nice and tidy.

>>133739074
I also thought it would lead to something more important instead of "lol, Im so random".

It was to mimic a shonen manga. The author said it himself.

Maybe for you. For me the guy sounds like a moronic individual. Consuming literature blindly is never good, not caring about what other thinks, especially the author sounds almost too self-absorbed. Nothing is truly enjoyed if you can not share and talk about it, be open to new ideas, and respecting the writer.

I met Nihei before he did Sidonia, got my shit signed, and had a short conversation with him. Guy was awesome, and made newly signed Blame and Biomega even more fun to read. At a later point I also started reading Toriko, it was average, nothing special, just to kill time, but when I found out the guy became a sex convicted criminal by buying underaged sex, it made me drop it.
tl;dr: Having a sense of respect for the author that like his fans, is quite nice. And can heighten the fun. The writer writing average shit, being a dick dampens the fun.

Where did he say anything that contradicted this?

The cult was supposed to represent hope. The cult's mission was to save the world from itself, and the innate evil within mankind. The whole allusion to Christ was pretty transparent, and although full of self-doubt, Pegasus manages to pull through and triumph over the dark spot. In this way, they save everyone from destruction and grant many a wish to those needing them.

But as we see, the win is only temporary. There's no escaping from this perpetual cycle. But even so, Pegasus' sacrifice serves to give some self-belief that everything might turn out alright.
