I thought the franchise was going to die with AGE, I got into Gundam at Wing and enjoyed 00. Watched SEED in high school, so at least the teen angst didn't go unwasted on me. would probably never watch it ever again with decent subs.
Unicorn was a great leap to recover the franchise, but that took way too long. Orphans will save it, but hopefully the next Gundam series will be better instead of turning into shit again.

Gundam is far too large and profitable of a franchise for one flop to even come close to killing it. As another anon said in one thread, its basically the Batman of Japan. Most of the general populace is aware of it even if they don't watch it, new shit comes out all the time, toys everwhere, regular video games, etc. It even has its own magazine that contains various ongoing gundam manga and news.
It's too big to die at this point. It would take a string of flops and the plamo building market abandoning the kits for it to be in any serious danger.

yeah i thought g reco was a pretty mess. There was a story in there but it was super rushed and the pacing was absolutely awful in those first couple of episodes. It wasted time on the pointless backpacks too. It did get better once they reached space but the final episode ended up being super rushed and poorly paced again trying to cram too much stuff in before it ended.
Still gorgeous though. I think the tone is a lot different to most gundam series too which puts a lot of people off.
So I haven't kept up with this series since Gundam 00. I'm really enjoying Iron Blood Orphans.
I understand there's also G-Reco and some kind of Gundam Bakugan Battle Brawlers crap.

First season of build fighters is fun despite the premise, you'll enjoy it more if you're familiar with the franchise as a whole as its mostly fanservice. the second season build fighters Try is pretty terrible in comparsion, was a cheap cash grab after the first seasons unexpected popularity.
g reco seems pretty hit or miss with most peoplemostly miss, it looks good but the story is all over the place and can be difficult to follow for some people.
Theres the unicorn OVAs which had some nice animation and a great soundtrack but the story was kind of silly, id only watch it if you're familiar with most of the the universal century stuff.

Gundam never appealed to foreigners because there's few Gundam shows that are actually good on their own. Tomino's way of directing is totally incompatible with the Western audience, that's why shows like NGE or Code Geass were far more popular here than Gundam.
