This especially seems to be a thing with shojo manga, where a series isn't outright canceled but just....sort of in limbo for years at a time. Glass Mask had it's first new volume in like 15-20 years a few years back, but the author has insisted since 2009 it will end soon but the 50th volume has been delayed since 2013.
