There's a lot of ups and downs but each time it cycles through there's usually a little progression. Like starting to find his own method of dueling and gaining Enlightenment Paladin instead of trying to do it full tou-san, full-time.

Zexal wasn't great, but it had one of the best tournament arcs in the franchise (if not the best). Duels on rollercoasters was some of the funnest shit I've ever watched.
Incidentally, GX is the best entry in the franchise and GX's tournament arc was godawful. To this day I have no clue what they were thinking with that shit even if there were a few good moments.
