The big claim about rebellion I hear is that it ruined the Madoka series.
Not for me, man. Rebellion saved the Madoka series in my opinion.The central narrative question of PMM is 'Can Homura protect Madoka?' The series does not resolve this question, because just when the answer is about to be revealed 'no she can't' Madoka steps in and God-powers Homura out of the hot seat. In Rebellion Homura actually gets enough power to answer the question and the answer appears to be 'Yes she can, provided Homura keeps her safe and does not directly interact with her.' That's the resolution to the narrative that Madoka needed and Rebellion made it happen.

Kriemhild Gretchen wasn't just canceled out by Madoka's Hope; It was dealt with just like all the other witches, with Madoka preemptively erasing it from existence with her wish. The fact that it was her OWN witch, and a nigh-unstoppable one at that is completely besides the point.

It seems like if it were as straightforward as you say, a logical being like Kyuubey would have known Madoka would slay her witch before it was created just as with every other. The ending of the series wasn't Urobuchi enough. The ending of Rebellion was pretty Urobuchi. That's why everyone hated it.

Rebellion's ending is true canon ending.

If you're someone that thinks the characterization in Rebellion was bad then you can't be reasoned with on anything else. Sayaka on her own evolved as a character from when the series ended. Kyouko and Madoka were kept out of the spotlight but still had lots of subtle elements that added to their character. The only bad character was Nagisa because she didn't have a character.
