The anime actually has a conclusion. It's the light novel that ended unresolved. While it is a happy end I didn't like the path to it and the most intersting parts are wrapped up in the 1:30 finale ED credit scene so that was frustrating as well.

S4 started on the right track, but quickly dived back down to it's roots, it's S3 roots, and dedicated a large portion of the series to nonsense. That big dumb dragon exists because they couldn't close the plot in enough time.
The LNs are a little better about plot, but it's still plagued (in my opinion) with harem nonsense. I will admit that Siesta isn't half the annoying slut she is in the anime, but I would rather she fucking go, or learn to fight or something.

Well, what happens is that Saito is alive, and hanging out in a forest, but since he doesn't have the runes on his hands anymore (Because he "died", he's afraid of being completely useless and stays in the forest with Elf Whatsherface
Meanwhile, everyone's talking about the war, and Louise has locked herself inside of her room, and everyone tries to cheer her up and tells her to do the summoning spell again, and if it doesn't work, then that means Saito's alive. She doesn't want to do it because she's afraid of the answer, but tries it, and the summoning circle appears.
Saito actually saw the circle, but he's now training with that one Short-haired lady knight, having been sent by the queen to find him, and decides not to go, just yet.
Louise, in despair goes to a tower and she's about to jump off, but she gets caught by Seista who tells her not to give up because she hasn't given up either. Siesta loses her grip and they fall on a fresh clay statue Guiche was making of Saito by hand.
Taking this as a sign, they go out to go find him.
The anime doesn't even try, there's a lot more story to go for.

In the LN, Saito fought that battle like champion, in the anime he fought like a chump and died surrounded by people. In the LN he went through the army like a hurricane constantly blitzing through formations taking out officers and commanders. He finally collapsed after failing to defeat the general which is when his wounds and exhaustion finally got to him. His sword then took control of him and ran him off into the woods where he ended up getting found by the elf girl who revived him. Except since he died he didn't have his familiar status anymore. So he starts living with the elf and the kids and stuff there.
Meanwhile Louise has gone totally depressed back at the academy, never leaving her room. She gets the idea stuck in her head that Saito has to be alive and she tests it by casting the summon familiar spell again, since if her familiar is alive the spell shouldn't work. To her dismay the portal opens and she goes totally catatonic. At that point she's basically barely eating, she keeps having dreams of Saito dying and leaving her alone which makes her get the idea of killing herself which she tries to do. Siesta manages to save her but they both end up falling off the tower anyway, luckily on to the soft dirt pile / statue of Saito that Guiche was building.
The two girls together decide then that they aren't going to accept Saito's death until they see proof of it for themselves and they travel to fantasy britain to look for him.

Really though, I do wish someone would finish the light novel translations. I mean yeah he's dead and we won't see a conclusion, but the anime showed us how the author intended to end the story, so we pretty much know what would have happened. It was only 1-2 volumes from the end. I really just would like to finish what exists, just to have some closure.

What I think I like about this author the most, is that he isn't afraid to give the main characters some decent development. Looking back on ZnT and SnS (which I recently rewatched) I lot of character became significant in there own way despite starting out as your classic anime stereotypes. Its a real shame he passed away.

I actually prefered Siesta when I watched this anime. Seems weird that everyone hates her so, especially since Louise is just the bad kind of tsundere. I also thought Saito clearly showed more intrest in Siesta than in Louise in season 1 but completely forgot about her in season 2 which was weird. I switched to Tabitha in later seasons though.
