What I think is waaaay far off, and actually impossible is designing an AI as capable of action and thought and interaction as another human being.

As if this wasn't bad enough, AI is renowned among the scientific community for being the absolute slowest development field. That's why it's treated like such a holy grail. We'll probably have commercialized space travel and colonized planets thousands of years before we have "true" AI.
It's really not as simple as "lol it's just an organic supercomputer", we've used millions of neural networks and we couldn't even get something resembling a rat brain.
