I'm curious, what's that treatment? In Kai the epilogue was almost exactly the same, Goku went off with Uub. Aside of that, they haven't don't anything with him , unless you put aside the little he did in GT.

The only ones that ended up "playing safe" establishing characterizations on the younger characters was Toei with GT and that was a true disaster.
GT Trunks : Watered Down Future Trunks. Shitty fighter.
GT Goten : Copy/Paste of manga epilogue Goten with magnified manwhore attitude. Shitty fighter.
GT Pan : fusion of Bulma's straighfowardness, Videl's tomboy attitude and Chi-Chi's looks mixed with brattyness and all gone wrong. Shitty fighter, mostly due to her losing her way during almost the whole series until grandpa Goku rekinled that flame, and still, when that happened, the series ended.
GT Marron : Normal Girl with nothing to add. Dresses like a grandma. Doesn't even fight.
GT Bra : Shopping crazed gurl/loli with slutorian queen tendencies. Doesn't even fight.
GT Uub : Wasted potential the character.
To Toriyama, almost all of them are almost blank slates. Why would he play it "safe"?
