Pretty underwhelming for a movie that celebrates the 25 year anniversary of the franchise.

Action is superb. Plot is mediocre. Depth is nowhere near the original movie. Think standard ARISE episode with better production quality and SAC feels.

They tried to give homage to the original movie and the SAC series and it shows. I thought the after credits scene is cool. Prob can expect another TV series by the looks of it.
>>
Plan to get in to the series soon so i was wondering, how's the dub for them?
>>
Also, I hate how the movie tries really hard to obfuscate the plot when it can be just explained in simple terms. The original movie had great depth and it added to the movie. The new movie suffers from it.
>>
>>133064624
If you're talking about the 2015 movie or the ARISE OVA's, I don't think there are dubs for them, but I could be wrong.

The dubs for SAC are decent but not FMA or cowboy bebop level by any means.
>>
>>133064525
Why isn't GITS dead yet? It hasn't been relevant for 10 years or more
>>
>>133064805
It's still the best of the genre and everyone knows it. Too bad all their attempts at "modernizing" the franchise only ended up hurting it. The movie is not bad by any means. Just nowhere near the original's level. If they learn from the mistakes maybe we can expect a kickass tv series out of the franchise again.
>>
>>133064912
>It's still the best of the genre
Scifi? Please.
>>
>>133064936
Tell me one cyberpunk anime that even comes close
>>
It's almost like cyberpunk in general is refusing to be political, so adheres to an aesthetic and instead of tackling problems of a highly technological society.
>>
>>133064968
vs Arise? Pretty much anything ;)
>>
>>133064968
Mardock Scramble and Lain
>>
Yeah, just felt like another episode of Arise desu senpai.

Which is fine since Arise wasn't bad as some people like to make it out to be.
>>
>>133065527
>Lain
>comparable to gits
kek
>>
>>133065540
It's good, but half as good as SAC.
>>
>>133065704
Not him but it's definitely DEEPer
>>
>>133064968
Ninja Slayer.
>>
>>133064525
>Pretty underwhelming
at this point i feel this is just the default meme response when discussing gits here

it was great and the sound effects deserve a mention, you're just not seeing these for the first time.
>>
>>133068338
Yeah the visuals and the sound effects were done very well. It's not a bad movie by any means. Just wish they would have done more than create another episode of ARISE with higher production value.
>>
>>133065527
>Mardock Scramble
>comparable to anything that isn't the worst I've ever seen
kek
>>
>>133069104
So, it's like what Solid State Society was to SAC? Cause that one was just meh, and the base level for Arise is much lower.
>>
>>133065704
Lain is superior to your entry level cyberpunk
>>
>>133069639
Yep it's pretty much exactly that.
>>
>>133064525

I'm like a huge GITS fan. It just feels like watching everything in low-resolution, the plot, the characters, everything. It's a bit like reading Terry Pratchett's last book.

ARISE, taken together, doesn't stand up to even one episode of SAC.
>>
>>133069706
>Lain
>the anime that's derivative of pretty much every notable anime that came out in its time
>superior to gits

better check ur cyber-brain, anon
>>
>>133069639

Solid State Society was great.
>>
>>133069639
>>133069735
At least SSS has a thought provoking ending. This movie ends on a retarded note.
>>
>>133069832
GitS was derivative of its manga ;)
>>
>>133070133
It's 10x better than the manga. The original manga is actually just mediocre.
>>
>>133070223
Still derivative.
>>
It looked so much shitter than the original movie.

I miss when movies looked good.
>>
>>133070258
didn't realize there's still a lain fag alive in this day and age
>>
>>133064525
I hate how fucking saturated this shit is these days. The color pallet is so goddamn in your face all the fucking time, can they just take it easy?
The more neutral scheme is one of the charms of the older series and lent it its style. Can't deal man, I just can't get with this new program.
>>
>>133070290
It doesn't look bad. It's just too polished, bright and clean.
>>
>>133070498
Digital and soulless, just the way nobody likes it.
>>
>>133070498
to be fair pretty much every anime being made today are like that
>>
>>133070431
More of a Lainfag than a GitSfag
>>
>>133070498
I don't think that's the real problem, innocence was saturated as fuck compared to the first one, and it still looked fantastic. The color palette just looks off.
>>
>ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ;)
>>
>>133070258
There's nothing truly new under the sun, anon. GiTS however was groundbreaking. It's considered among the very finest of the cyberpunk genre. Even The Matrix was heavily inspired by it. It's also one of the few major anime that was made entirely with adults in mind. It really has no equal in its field.
>>
I hope all the nostalgia-fags will die immediately.
>>
>>133064730
The first 2 or 3 Arise OVAs do have dubs and yes they are fucking horrible, mostly compounded by the fact that McGlynn no longer voices the Major.
>>
>>133070814
>major
is a weasel word.

There are plenty of minor anime made entirely with adults in mind but those don't "count" right?
>>
>>133064730
SAC dub far surpasses FMA and Bebop. Jesus get taste you cluck.
>>
Do I need to watch the rest of Arise before this movie?
>>
>>133070878
What does this have to do with anything?
>>
>>133070997
I wouldn't recommend watching Arise at all.
>>
>>133070997
yes, you need to watch arise.

When are they going to acknowledge that the manga Major, the one from the original source material, is a lesbian harem lead and does lesbian orgy in her down time?

Don't fucking tell it's not part of her characterization
>>
>>133071105
What about the series? Do I need to watch the last two episodes, which are apparently beyond the storyline of the films?
>>
>>133070892
>but those don't "count" right?
you sound like an edge-lord teenager. i dont understand why you're trying so hard to schil for an anime like lain in a GitS thread. GitS is widely regarded as one of the best in the genre. if you like lain more than you like GitS, that's fine. but check your autism because nobody gives a shit about lain here in this thread.
>>
>>133071155
That part has always been smut shit for Masamune to jerk off to. It has no relevance to anything else established in the anime movies or series.
>>
>>133071155
Based Shirow.
>>
>>133071197
I only watched ARISE and went straight into the movie. I think ARISE is the only exposition you need before the movie. You can tell there were some developments but only minor ones.
>>
>>133071155
well the manga is actually quite mediocre tho. the animated series and the movies are only based on the manga but they're pretty widely different works.
>>
>>133071206
I'm shilling for minor anime. Lain is not minor.

Look, if you want to talk about lain or some minor anime, go talk about it in the right threads. the guy was simply explaining why GitS is such a good series. Good god you're actually autistic.
>>
Hey guys, why did that one guy explode in Arise 1 and yet he was just singed rather than being a burnt skeleton?
>>
>>133071675
I'm disputing that " It's also one of the few major anime that was made entirely with adults in mind." has any significance.
>>
>>133071761
why are you even trying to dispute that statement when he's clearly just explaining why he thinks GitS is good? you realize completely ignoring the context, focusing on one or two small details, and distorting the original argument so you can dispute it is what autists with low critical reading skills do all the time? can you stop with your lain and minor anime bullshit?
>>
The plot was pretty coherent in contrast to the OVAs.
Section 9 feels like Section 9 finally.
Major feels a little more like the Major.
Saito bullying was fun.
Action was great.
Direction was a huge step up from the OVAs.
Music was still garbage with some minor exceptions.
The Major's design didn't change at series end.

8.5/10 it was okay
>>
>>133072108

you probably didn't see the after credits scene

You mean a 5/10 or a 6/10 at least.

You still think I'm "shilling" for Lain don't you? I'm shilling against GitS because it isn't very good.

/a/nons are pretty spoiled. Anything short of perfection is so repulsive that it triggers autistic fits of rage. Anything that hits exactly what they want is worshiped as a god. They can't have a more even a reasonable opinion because they can't handle the disappointment that comes with watching something that doesn't fully engage you. So they hide in their hugboxes and echochambers, flinging shit at others until they go away.

I just don't see this level of cinematic mastery in anime movies anymore. I don't think the problem is GitS specific. We won't be seeing another Akira or another Ghost in the Shell for a long time. Now that studio ghibli has become all but a meme there is no hope. We're living in the dark ages of anime.

>>
>>133064665
Actually, the ending philosophy of the movie is like baby tier philosophy and horribly bad appeal-to-nature fallacies.

It's cool when you're 14.

SAC was the best.
>>
>>133079877
when you say the movie you mean the 2015 movie right?

i have a feeling the reboot in general is trying to appeal to younger audiences.
>>
For the dub they changed the VA for major but kept the old one in for another role. Shits confusing yo
>>
>>133080366
No, the original movie - whatever it was, like 20 years ago. I watched it again, and I cringed so hard during the entire ending scene. The dialog between the major and the AI was so, so bad.
>>
>>133080614
idk, i don't think the ending of the movie is as simple as you say it is. the original movie in general is really heavy with nietzsche, not baby-tier philosophy. The final fight scene vs the tank is full of symbolic moments at every turn. i definitely think it's waaaay too complicated for a 14 year old to comprehend.
>>
>>133081078
I'm just talking about the dialog between the major and the AI after the fight is over. And trust me, the dialog is shit.

Is Alt. Architecture necessary?

Best release?

It leads up to the movie but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. I've only seen ARISE and it was alright.

>>133081680
Only the last two episodes are new as far as I know, so watch those if you want, but even then, I don't know if they're needed for the movie.

That screenshot is from a movie? What's the budget? Two cans of beer and a cheeseburger?
>>
>>133082705
These days, 'movie' seems to mean 'two hour long OVA'.
>>
>>133070814
I'm a huge gits fan myself but I'm not going to pretend that it is just rehashed Neuromancer ideas and Bladerunner aesthetics. At least Lain was somewhat original.
>>
>>133073982
this is really the best thing about the original gits. As animation goes it was a god damn masterpiece.

Cmon though... Batou is fucking Armitage, major Kusinagi is Molly Millions and the bearded hacker guy is the Finn.
>>
>>133080614
You're watching the dubs then, new friend.
>>
>>133084069
No, it's just bad.

"Why should I give up my personal autonomy and join with you?"

"The natural thing for life to do is evolve, reproduce."

"Oh. Makes perfect sense. Righty-oh."
>>
>>133085058
Her choice at the end explained by the soul searching scenes she has with batou on the boat while they're drinking beer. Yeah its kind of stupid but shes already leaning towards that idea of transhumanism since she's mostly machine at that point anyways. She can't reproduce in the physical sense anymore since she doesn't have a body and its making her all angsty n shit. They really go all out with the corny bs with her new loaner body being a child as if the AI and her gave birth..

It is still fucking stupid but a little more thought out than you are describing.
>>
>>133085243
You misunderstand. My problem wasn't with Motoko giving up her "free will". My problem was incredibly bad "philosophy" that the AI was dishing out. Every line was rap. Every line was a blatant logical fallacy - mostly appeal to nature fallacy.
>>
>>133073982

Ultimately it's about budget and it's kinda sad to see what happened to GiTS.
When it comes to anime movies, there are the family kind with big budgets and otaku oriented kind with cheap budget. Eva managed to find a spot in between while GiTS had to lower its budget tremendously after Innocence.
>>
>>133088055
But SAC and by extension SSS still managed to look a hell of a lot better.
>>
>>133088163
SAC had a really big budget and it shows.
>>
>>133088319
Which raises the question as to why Arise doesn't have a decent one. Money can't solve poor writing or dumb decisions, but it can go some way to remedying a poor soundtrack and awful animation.
>>
>>133088402
The only reason I can think of is that after Innocence, the sponsors lost their faith in GiTS. Innocence had Ghibli-tier budget and only managed to recoup half its budget.
>>
>>133088593
well SAC 2nd gig did well after innocence's god awful mess so there's really no reason to think innocence has a lot to do with the budget cut.

do we even know how much budget ARISE has? i mean it has some low moments but it doesnt look that cheap to me.
>>
>>133088645
But was that really enough? Innocence cost more than both SAC seasons.

They rarely reveal budgets anymore, but SSS had a budget of 360 million yen. GiTS new movie obviously had to be cheaper, because it managed a little bit over 60 million yen in the box office. They had to adjust budgets accordingly because their demographic isn't as big as it was from SAC days.
>>
>>133065527
Mardock Scramble became a shitpile.
You just cited the first two, and only things that came to your head.

I'm making myself watch ARISE right now, and that's a painfully accurate assessment. It feels like GITS made by a cargo cult, like they thought a superficial copy would be just as good.

Yeah, no. SAC was one of the shows with more budget at their disposal, not even ufotable has had that budget in comparison.

If I remember correctly by the moment it was made SAC had like a $8 million budget.
