They're afraid of the heavens, as in the divine mystery of celestial bodies, ie the stars, which the Vertexes represent. Uranophobia having Greek/Latin roots actually fits the Vertexes perfectly since the 12 evolved Vertexes in 298 and 300 are named after the Zodiac signs of Greek/Roman mythology. The word Vertex itself is of Latin origins. But consider this. Any Japanese reading 天空恐怖症候群 will know instantly what it means, as the word consists of sky, fear, syndrome. In contrast, an English reader reading Uranophobia is unlikely to recognise it. As evinced by the people in these threads, most people don't know the word. Therefore, unless you've studied Latin to some degree, you'll probably read it as "fear of Uranus", as I did when I first saw it. This, of course, inspires very different connotations to that which a Japanese reader would visualise upon reading it. I argue that the aim of the translation should be to as best as possible recreate for the reader the thoughts that reading it natively would provide, and although that's of course not possible to do perfectly due to limitations of the English language, I think "sky fear syndrome" achieves that better.
