The plot is the same as it's always been, but XY is great.
Misty was originally axed from the show for good simply because May became more popular as a female companion as Hoenn was airing, and it made the writers realize they didn't have to bother bringing Misty back. So they gave her a few cameos to wrap up her character and after that they were done with her.
Had May not been successful at replacing Misty, we might have seen Misty return the same way Brock did and last a really long time...probably till BW.

Well what other reason would there be? The writers certainly didn't know back in 2002 they were going to bring in a new female companion every series, or if the anime could continue on without Misty who was in every single episode up to that point.
The writers based Misty's fate entirely on how May was received as her replacement. May became incredibly popular, the Contests were the most popular addition to the show, so Misty was phased out over the course of Hoenn.
There's a reason why Misty hasn't had a cameo in an entire decade since 2005 which was when the Hoenn arc ended.
