They are gigantic armored humans, and when you get in the pilot pod (which is injected into the giant human's spine), it fills up with blood that you have to breathe. Also, you feel all the senses of the giant human, so when it takes damage you feel corresponding pain. The giant human also regularly goes insane and starts killing things at apparent random. It is not fun to pilot an EVA.

Also, there's the issue of piloting the thing in an active combat situation. I'm pretty sure almost anyone would head into the plug at least once if it was just a test run or something, but very, very few people would want to actually take on an angel.

Yes. Because I wasn't specifically raised to be useless and have no self esteem or real desires/sense of self. So I'd have acted VERY differently, but I don't blame Shinji either because he's basically what they wanted him to be. The whole scenario was planned out and he was supposed to just be a cog in his father's grand scheme so his pops didn't WANT him to have any real balls beyond what minimum was necessary because if he actually decided to use his Godbot for what he wanted boy would that throw a wrench in things.
I have two great parents though, a good time growing up in the countryside back in the day when you could just go roam around and build forts and shit, and by 14 I'd had a couple decent experiences like a major climb in the Alps on a trip, being off on my own for a few months in Europe etc. My pops taught me how to shoot and was generally a cool dude. I'd still have been in trouble but I'd have done differently then Shinji. But then for all those reasons why the fuck would I be there in the first place, they wouldn't want me. I think Shinji's fucked up relationship with his father is what caused most of Shinji's initial reluctance. Many people fail to notice that during that scene, Shinji is basically just playing chicken with his dad. He doesn't really believe that he is necessary for the mission, and he wants to see what his father's back up plan is to validate his feelings.
Also, you need to recognize the fact that an imminent combat situation can be incredibly daunting, especially if you have no knowledge of how to operate the equipment you are going to use and just saw the thing you are going to fight survive a nuke.

Well, I assume that we'd go into the situation ignorant too not with a bunch of genre savvy meta knowledge. We're just talking about us at 14 which at least in my case was before I even knew what anime was before Eva existed anyway. So all we'd know at first was "do this or everyone is fucked we're sure you can handle it" and then learn the rest along the way. Objectively speaking from the real world, child soldiers are an actual thing and can start way, way younger, and plenty of them do "fine" although they tend to end up fucked up in some ways. So I bet a lot of us could in fact adapt, Eva conditions are actually pretty damn good compared to actual real world war in the 3rd world. I'd probably train a lot harder though and question way more the point of even going to school at all vs combat training.

The reason it's aggravating is because so much of the show is dedicated to illustrating something so natural and obvious to us. Yes, a few scenes here and there illustrated just how broken Shinji is because of constantly having to fight is a good idea, but 5+ minute long segments of him trying to run away from his duties as an Eva pilot? Fundamentally, yes. Also there's clearly separation with the Eva's own feelings most of the time, we see them calm in the cockpit plenty when they're not actually fighting and experiencing pain. But it doesn't really matter: in real combat people get hurt plenty (hell in stressful situations period, I've been there) and don't even feel it because of adrenaline and shock, but the fear of death in the lead up and the come down after will be the same either way. Ordinary mechs are plenty fragile, particularly Valks which are pretty much entirely about maneuverability and raw pilot skill rather then tanking hits. Every time you sortie it's going to be at least as high a risk of death as Eva if not way, way higher, and there's no gigantic organization dedicated solely to your victoryat least until they're done with youand recovery each time. Mech pilot = single mook amongst dozens to hundreds to thousands of others, unless you are good enough to be ace-level you aren't worth much. In Eva if you don't lose at least you're a fucking hero, you've got massive dedicated support staff, resources, and plenty of personal leverage for mistakes even since you aren't replaceable.
Being a mech pilot would have its moments too of course, and I'm sure you'd build a different set of connections (like camaraderie with your fellow pilots) if you didn't die too quick or fuck up in which case everyone would hate you. But in a real war it'd be nasty just like any other real war. Obviously just joy riding could be lots of fun, but I assume we're talking about combat here because joyriding an S2 Eva with no angels or seele to worry about would probably be fun too.

No anon, it really isn't. Or more accurately, it may be a realistic response for SHINJI himself forced to constantly put his life on the line IN THAT SCENARIO. But if you think it's realistic in general then you are just really ignorant. Historically there were plenty of 14 year olds in combat, including on naval ships and such which might be a rough approximation. So if you want to know what "realistic" was just go fucking read about REALITY. Fact is lots of them did very well and continue to do quite well, but that's because there was specific training and support structures. Even for older people, conditioning & support is actually one of the most important parts of a real military, normal humans have to have a lot of psychological readjustment and training to basically run towards bullets rather then away. Basic training on up, all the rituals, regs, command structure and so on are in part about making that all happen.
So for a normal 14 year old who isn't fucked up and has learned some independence and then is actually given training and support it'd be normal for them to adapt very differently then what we see from Shinji. Obviously that's not the story they wanted to tell here though.

Outside of the likes of Sparta, the objective fact is that most people of any age aren't prepared to war period, and weren't ten or fifty or a hundred years ago either. Humans are adaptable though, and most 14 year olds aren't as messed up as Shinji either.
Really though, ultimately blame rests almost 100% on NERV and Gendo and Seele and everyone else up the command chain, not on Shinji (or any other soldier in that position). Given proper training and support, even Shinji likely could have done vastly better and been significantly happier. It's not his fault (nor would it be anyone else's in that position) that everyone actually in charge and with knowledge wanted to fuck with him, didn't care, or were retarded. It was an organizational failure, or more accurate it was an organizational success at a goal which was entirely different from what a genuine normal professional military organization treating the Angels purely as a conventional (albeit stupendously powerful and dangerous) enemy would have.

To expand upon this, think about what the US Military, or really any advanced professional military would do given the scenario:
- The enemy is a fixed number of massively powerful alien beings.
- They will be going for a fixed, known target which must be defended, and loss of which will result in the total destruction of humanity.
- Conventional weapons are at best a delaying and distraction tactic.
- A small number of super bots based off of reverse engineered tech are available, but since we don't really get the tech they have significant limitations including that only specific 14 year olds can pilot them.
- No really, that's just how it is, no there is nothing that can be done about it. Be happy we've got anything and aren't just fucked.
- You've got the full funds of humanity behind you because it's everything on the line, the mechs have such-and-such abilities etc.
Given that USMil would just deal with it professionally. So these kids are keys and their emotional well being critical? So be it. They'd be treated damn well, the military would call in experts and psychs, they'd figure out exactly what rewards and training would work best and constantly adapt as necessary, full briefings/debriefings, make sure they were celebrities if that was what was best, whatever it took. Big teams would work to guess and set up contingencies for everything they could each time. They'd deal with it. It'd be a pretty different show, no matter who said 14yo is.
