I always interpreted Kyubey's entropy scare to refer to the heat death of the universe.
If so, this was hardly an imminent crisis. The universe is only 13.8 billion years old, and entropy won't start to become a problem for another Quadrillion years or so (no new stars will be born after that). Even then that is nowhere near "heat death" as far as the universe is concerned.
Our own sun will be gone in only 6 billion years.

In order to do this, it gives you time to get to know the characters. They aren't anything special, but they exist and have their sad backstories that explain their personalities. They serve their purpose. Madoka must learn from her friends' mistakes and grow up in the process, using her selflessness for power. And while all this happens, you get fancy music and animation.
