Saber seemed to have no issues with announcing her challenge after flying off the cliff, by shouting Rider's name, and right after that it seems before they even clashed she realized something was wrong and sort of hesitated. Yet when she lands on the ground, knowing that Irisviel is not at the scene, she doesn't seem to actually talk to Rider or try to clear anything up.
Instead the scene breaks off, and when we return, both sides are already ready to fight it out without saying anything to each other at all. This leads me to wonder if there is a scene missing where Saber tries to reason with Rider, but he wants to defeat her so badly he won't let her leave even though she knows they're not involved. I felt like the animation didn't do Rin's fight justice. When I read the VN, I got the feeling that Caster was very serious and was having a pretty big shoot out with Rin (though still one sided because of the jewel limitations). This felt less like Rin was managing to match Caster's stronger spells and more like she was blocking some pity potshots which is probably why her gem magic seems disappointing to some.

I own the sodding blu-ray box, m8, and as much as I love the show, even I have to admit the character models and animation are most of the time absolutely hideous. They didn't even bother to fix those horrible quality faces in the debate of Kings and the final battle of Kerry vs Kirei made me want to cry. Sure, there were nice shots along the way too, but few and far in between. UBW has been a LOT better so far.
