Yes. SAO's ...LN? came out first. Well before .hack's material. Problem is, there was a whole shit-pile load of .hack shit released for a block of about five or ten years--some of it good, some of it.. not so good. Lots of people are getting burned out on the mmo-anime genre.
Personally, No Game No Life is the closest thing to a game-type anime I've truly enjoyed in a while. Season 1 of SAO was good, faery dance was okay but lacking, GGO was... meh at best. Then again, Halkegenia Online spoiled me.

People generally hate SAO because of the overly forced edge that plagued the writing. Add in an unlikable "I know everything and used it to be better than you :^)" character in Kirito, and lifeless side characters that only exist to fawn over Kirito and his actions.
This series is refreshing in comparison because everything flows together naturally. The characters are likeable, the MC isn't a Mary Sue, the premise is great, side characters have a reason for why they are there, and the voice actors are all putting in a good effort. Quite enjoying the upbeat soundtrack aswell.

Log horizon, SAO, NLNG and others paved the way and prepared the conceptual componets needed for DunMachi, it did not just sprung out of nowhere and if it had, we probably could not understand DunMachi and the book did not sell.
As you wrote, SAO and DunMachi are obviously different, but both relies on a RPG game like setting and use power fantasy to lower the entrance threshold for readers and that's similar enough.
What I see behind DunMachi is darker, bigger and more contentious than SAO, but the expressions and the style used for story telling have a lot in common. Though with Vol7, I have to agree it significantly deviated from the pattern.
