Most of it probably comes from older anime viewers. Many grew up on harem series like Tenchi, Ranma, Ken Akamatsu's works, etc so a lot of the harems that come out these days typically leave much to be desired in every way possible. There are some decent ones about imo but they're overshadowed by the sea of generic LN adaptations.

This is only an issue because most of the MCs are just badly written. That or the series is just badly written in general. In contrast, it doesn't take much to make a cute girls doing cute things/ecchi show. Of course it will be better if you remove the male MC. Neither tend to go for realism when it comes to relationships and development. However, one is centered around relationships/development while the other isn't.
