I think they do a much better job in Japan of emphasizing sports as a reason to be together, make friends and have fun as opposed to a way to show off by being ultra competitive.
In a league, there are dozens of losers and only one winner. If you emphasize winning too highly it becomes detrimental to many of the non winners. Which is over half of them that will lose more than win.

Because sports anime is designed to attract normalfags. If it was too normal, it'd turn them off because they'd feel gay (since sport anime tends to have at least a small amount of fujo pandering). When it's unrealistic they don't notice the fujo pandering because they are busy staring at the unrealistic stuff. Those are both pretty realistic, except I think the Baby Steps guy probably has a better grasp on the intricacies of tennis than the Meguru guy has a grasp on MMA. Then again, I know way more about MMA than tennis, so I'm more apt to pick up shortcomings in the MMA.
The matches in Meguru are usually a bit cleaner and simpler than what I'd expect out of a real match. Also, Meguru tapping a BJJ brown belt ever as someone with a couple years of un-focused grappling training is pretty lol, as well as some of the karate bullshit Takeshi (is that his name?) does.
I don't know enough about tennis to know how realistic the matches are, but Baby Steps training and the overall theme seems realistic as fuck. Ultimately, it's a story about how hard work, diligence, and INTELLIGENT AND FOCUSED PRACTICE is the actual way to get good at something. Maruo basically has the perfect attitude and mindset to be a pro at anything. He knows how to learn, so he would be great at anything he decided to focus on. The manga reminds me a lot of Searching for Bobby Fisher, which is about a chess prodigy who became a taichi world champion because he learned how to learn.
All of the data tennis stuff seems pretty unrealistic, especially when he does it mid-match, but the training seems so real. I also appreciate how the sports psychology stuff seems a cut way above most other sports manga. He actually talks to real professionals and nobody talks about GUTS.

Uh, Yawara's grandpa continually sets up situations where Yawara is forced to defend herself or has to fight despite not wanting to. That's... a crime. I guess it's supposed to be funny, but I never really found it that funny.
Yawara herself is an immensely talented judoka with no interest in pursuing judo, because she's more interested in shitty boys and home ec. I guess that's just her being a teenager, but, guess what, teenagers are shitty people. She's super whiny all the time, which is a little understandable considering her grandpa is basically organizing assaults on her person every other chapter.
Speaking of shitty boys, Yawara's first crush is a "handsome" womanizer judo coach.. for her rival. Both Yawara and her rival have crushes on him because he's handsome. I guess. He appears to have no problems flirting with both of them despite them being like 16 years old and him being college age or past it.
Her rival is the stereotypical ojou-sama who's good at everything effortlessly and is looking for a real challenge. Like, seriously stereotypical. Maybe Yawara is the genesis of that archetype, I dunno. Does it predate Ace wo Nerae?
Anyway, Yawara basically curbstomps everyone anyway. I only got like 20 or 30 chapters in. Maybe 40? I can't remember.
