It's why after the fact, when Ebina goes to meet Hikigaya on the roof, she admits that the two of them are actually perfect for each other--as they're both aware of the consequences of high school life and what maturity actually entails. But because she still has some time left in high school, she'd like to be a hypocrite just a little while longer, and enjoy the low hanging fruit while she can.
It's also why, immediately after, Hikigaya admits that he too is the biggest liar/hypocrite of them all. In a way, it is a self-reflection that he's more ready for the real world than others around him, and that to play ball with their emotional states, sometimes he has to be the hypocrite to get things done.
Hypocrisy isn't wrong when it's the only available option. Hypocrisy IS wrong, when there are other options, but the route is taken out of convenience and callousness.

In episode 4, Haruno explicitly states that Hikigaya is reading through her every move, like she had evil intentions.
Yeah, she was prepared for it, but she also liked him for it. Hikigaya has seen through the ploy, it's why he wants to be the fall guy in the end. It's his way out of the "closed room murder" that Haruno is setting up. It's hisgolden truth.
Incidentally, he sees through Hayato too, and amusingly, Haruno leaves stating "it's become boring now," not because it's actually boring. But that Hayato is there, he's too simple to read through, and she didn't feel like sticking around.
I'm certain she'd stayed longer if only Hikigaya was there.
Lastly, Hikigaya delivers some pretty scathing remarks to Hayato too when Hayato acted in the interest of Hikigaya. While I found the idea and his attempt touching, his delivery was bad and his end game (Hayato's) was atrocious.
Hayato fucked up by taking the pity route, the "I'm above you, haha--you bitches are so funny," route.

Well, Volume 9 is intended to be much calmer in nature and alleviate some of the tension caused by the drama of Volume 8. BRAINSTORMING should be a nice bit of comedic relief, and we still have Destinyland to stir up the shippers. And, of course, there's thegenuinescene coming up.
