They're not shit per se, just no match for European swords. They're good at what they're intended to do: fight against lightly armored opponents. It's a light and brittle but very sharp cutting sword (as evidenced by the curve: it minimizes contact with the surface striked and thus exerts more pressure).
European swords, on the other hand, were made to be more versatile. An European swordsman (in the Middle Ages, at least) could expect to fight both armed and unarmed swordsmen. Hence a straight blade that allows for piercing and halfswording.
The katana was a pretty good weapon for the time and the region, but inferior to European weapons. Not shit though, otherwise the Japanese would never have used it.
