I'd argue that BMW has actually become better at building Diesel engines than petrol ones lately. They have a long history of turbodiesel engines, but only started building turbo petrols en masse in relatively recently due to emission contraints. Even the new B47 engine in the 520d is a marvel of engineering. 190bhp, 60MPG+.
I don't actually have huge experience with petrol BMWs myself as they're relatively rare myself. I did have the joy of driving the previous generation M5 though. That 5 litre V10 is glorious.
