An original take on robots would be then manned robots.
Then manned robots fighting aliens.
Then manned robots fighting against each other.
Then eva, other deconstruction etc.
And now what? no new robot subgenre has popped up, only revisions of old ideas.
With mahou shoujo it's the same, we had our deconstructions, but that's it.
Kill la kill on the other hand didn't have a new take on an old idea, it just present the old idea in a funny context.
It's body snatchers + alien invaders + authoritarian dystopia solved by the power of friendship, which is nothing new.
Also originality doesn't equal quality, so while we're certainly lacking original ideas in recent years they are alright.

TTGL was the first to actually explicitly state that the rule of cool made you more powerful, and the premise of spiral and anti spiral is pretty unique.
I'd say Death Note, but there's been edgy stuff for years, which is pretty much just what it is after the first episode. He could have thrown away the book, and everything would have been fine but noooooo.
Katanagatari is a dark horse in this. Sure, it's a find all the objects story, but the similarities end there. The main character has no real desire to finish, he just does what he's told. Weapons vs what you later find out is some kind of ubermensch experiment is an interesting premise, and the foretelling of WW2 certainly gives it a unique spin, among pretty much everything else. That being said, it slipped everyone's minds, so yeah.
