I wouldn't have asked for a season 2 when the series ended, and I haven't even gotten around to the OVAs, but I'm a little bit disappointed. The show wasn't great, but the setting and atmosphere was cool, and I found myself looking forward to more of it when they announced the continuation. Shame.

This is a standard franchise milking strategy.
If anything, I'd say it's a good sign - one that the revenues exceeded expectations, warranting more careful exploitation.
I'd wager a guess that they are now going to see if&how well the novel sells, and if the results are promising, then they make any corrections resulting from reception and go produce a movie or a second season once the sales of the novel start dipping, in order to get even more sales on both.
There are MANY animes that were or are produced mainly as a present to fans/advertising of a LN or manga series. Arguably Mahouka, Yahari, DanMachi, Yumekui Merry fall in that cathegory.
