It ended at a perfectly good spot. At this point it's easy to fuck up that ending and hard to improve on it. It's better to give the writers time to make it better. Too much of a good thing isn't necessarily good, people could get sick of it or the story's pacing/budget could suffer.

Angel Beats was an experiment as the first of its kind, it could've been much better. I don't think anyone would disagree the ending was rushed as fuck, so many characters without development.
It's not a wonder they are making a VN out of it to flesh the story out properly.
Its episode count is also abnormal, like it was meant to be 2cour and was cut down at the last minute.
Hopefully they have learned from that experience.

Knowing Nagisa dies in Clannad doesn't make it not worth watching, because unlike Angel Beats it has a well developed cast and doesn't rely exclusively on tear-jerking twists to make you cry.
