Yes. This so much. Like TTGL, rather than shit like Bleach.

Aizen 'killing' Momo was such a shocking moment of betrayal and then they went and had her be 'only injured' way into the ark, and it just sucked a lot of the drama right out of the whole Aizen thing. Oh, ok, all those people we saw 'dead' were just injured because the writer is a tremendous pussy. So I guess any time a non-villain dies I can just assume they'll be revived eventually. Fucking dropped.

Kamina's death on the other hand really changed the whole pace of the anime. His sacrifice shaped the resolve of other characters, even a villain. Now that makes for a powerful narrative.

I'm not spoilering because FFS, these are so old, and people should expect spoilers in this type of thread. That ok with everyone else?

I can't stand this in serious storytelling. It feels so forced and not the buzzword. But literally and pulls me out of it. As if the world only exists to suit the whim of the author when it shouldn't. It should be identical to real life. Meaning everything should go on as it does without any care to the character. If anything, it should be a bright and beautiful day on a sad moment to contrast it. Almost as if the day is mocking the character.

This. Some of the saddest things I've read had more weight by noting that the events happened "under a clear blue sky." Elie Wiesel's "Night" does this. As his family is herded into the death camps and they're literally smelling the cooked flesh of innocent people being burned alive in furnaces, the narrator makes a point to mention, at the end of all the horrible details, that the weather is just fine out.

I love that theme. That notion that nature doesn't care about our problems. The idea that we're ultimately insignificant. I hate rainy funerals. When it didn't rain at Hughes' funeral and Roy used the nonexistent rain as a coverup for his own tears, I knew that fullmetal alchemist was better than your typical shounen shit.

No, the pathetic fallacy is for descriptions of inanimate objects as possessing emotions or related qualities. Like the sky can't be "depressed," but we might say that when writing. It raining when something sad happens isn't the pathetic fallacy.

>It should be identical to real life
I strongly disagree with this. The whole beauty of fiction is that it isn't real life, and that things can operate under different rules. The world ultimately DOES only exist to suit the whim of the author, and if he makes it sunny when someone dies, that's just as much his whim as making it overcast.

>>
>>123259579
>>123252826

It is not called the pathetic fallacy. The pathetic fallacy is when you ascribe human emotions to inhuman things. For example, it would be saying the sky wept from sorrow. The sky is incapable of weeping or feeling sorrow, so this is ascribing human emotions to the sky. In OP's example, the sky is not doing anything human. It may be reflecting the tone, but the sky itself has no human qualities.

The weather is following human emotion. The weather is not being described as feeling human emotion, which is what the pathetic fallacy requires.

I don't know if there is a specific term for nature reflecting the current tone.

What it all boils down to for me is intention.
Your shit to mediocre writers will use the rain to sort of exacerbate the emotional feeling of a scene and in yourself. As it's the most easy and typical. The great writer understands it fully and won't fall back on a tired device for those intentions. If he does use it, it'll be for a different reason. But who's to know such things? Just gotta make up your own damn mind I guess.
