I prefer Vinland Saga because the story actually moves, and I like its realism more. Berserk is too hit and miss with its arcs, not to say it's anything near bad.

The settings are crazy different. If you use "middle earth" loosely I guess I see where you're coming from, but that's a stretch and a half anon. The fact that they're both seinen has nothing to do with anything. That's just the audience that the series are aimed at.
One is fantasy, one is historical. There's nothing similar between the MCs besides the fact that they're good at fighting. They're views on the world are totally different, and now that Thorfinn isn't all about revenge they have almost nothing in common.

Because, if you took out the fact that the real time release pacing got screwed up for severals reasons, the boat isn't actually a bad plot device. Imagine if it still got released on a normal schedule, rather than what it is for various reasons.
Every story has a part where the protagonist, isolated from most worries, considers what he has done so far. If the protagonist himself doesn't do it, others do it for him. Avatar had it when aang got shot by lightning, harry potter had it in the final pensieve sequence in the books, and afterwards. George Orwell books tend to have it very close to the end, like in Animal Farm where every leader was indistinguishable, and in 1984 where he actually missed the lack of freedom.

Except both sides took radically different approaches. Thorfinn turns to escapism while Xin tries to help unify a country for peace. Both fail in the long run, but at least Qin managed to give lasting effects through the wall and road which benefited Han greatly. Canute's NSE crumbled into cookie bits the moment he died and nothing Thorfinn does amounts to anything. Xin becomes a duke on the other hand and his descendents range from generals to even establishing their own dynasty which lasts for hundreds of years.
