Even in that show Anno is portrayed as being really big on mecha anime right? (I'm only assuming). And you pretty much have to be in order to create Eva. That doesn't equate him to being an otaku. If I really like Mexican food that doesn't make me a culinary expert.

No one hates otaku more than Anno. He was able to turn his hatred of otaku into a groundbreaking anime that's been sucking up dollars for 20 years. Anno separated the wheat from the chaff, bunched up all the otakus into a clearly identified, easily marginalized, pandered to, and marketed to demographic.
