The game isn't the only official material where their personalities are explored. The anime followed most fairly well until episode 6, when they went full nonplayers fanbase wanking with Akagi. Other than that it has done a good job at it, the real problem with the anime is the shitty MUH HISTORICAL ACCURACY shit they've been pulling when the whole point of the game is to allow the girls to get over their regret from not being able to protect their fellow ships and sailors. Some ships even have PTSD or traumas from the way they sank and none of that has even been explored in the anime. It's like they don't even remember how they sank, or they would've noticed that history is repeating itself.

I don't know, I think Touhou has a legitimate niche as far as gameplay goes. It's not as reactions-heavy as most bullet hell, it has a significant puzzle component. Bullets are plentiful but relatively slow. Thus it engages a different skill set than the canonical danmaku games.

That's easy. The Kancolles are fighting some kinda demon fleet from under the sea. Spirits of sunken ships or something. In comparison 2hu has no 'major conflict': people get in play fights for petty reasons, because if they turned it up to full they'd just destroy each other. It's nice and laid back with half-serious threats tossed about.

I think he just wanted to popularize Touhou in the west and help create a western doujin culture similar to the one in Japan. Because of cultural differences he thought he could rely on crowdfunding like is generally accepted for western indie devs, got the Japanese scene pissed off at him, and began to autistically retreat into his own private world where everyone is against him.
Doesn't help that he's 2nd generation Japanese and doesn't speak the language. Probably hurts twice as much when the country he looks up to shits on him.
He's right in that the guidelines ought to be updated and loosened (they forbid selling a 2hu fangame in a non-2hu context, for one thing) but he sure isn't making a good case for it.

Kancolle is a waifu simulator wherein the only thing that keeps it interesting is the history of the ships. The characters barely have any background story at all. If they do have one, it is just not interesting enough
Outside of H doujin, Kancolle will either be just another generic harem, or cute girls doing cute things.
The opposite can be said on Touhou however. Every single character in touhou is rich with a background story, and each one shares a unique personality and goal in life. The true colors of their world shines in Non-H doujin. Furthermore, the fact that the good-vs-evil concept does not exist in Gensokyo allows the fans to freely love any character without malice
