A lot of the sci fi anime of the 70s and 80s were influenced by shit like the Space Race and the Osaka Expo. It'd probably take a major breakthrough in technology to get a spark for the genre again.

As much as I actually do like the modern art style at the moment (defined lips are fucking awesome), older styles were much better suited to having older characters actually look older, but it still is fine for lolis also. I mean shit, Lemon People was what really kicked off loli popularity in the 80s and they were still cute when they weren't too analogous to proper biology.

I honestly have some hope that they can get at least a little close. The filter G-Reco uses to make the lines look broken and rough like cel art is a good start.
Also, 80s style can look good in the digital age, too. Gundam Unicorn finds a nice balance between the old art style and modern production for characters.
