No, katanas were actually garbage. European swords werent just more durable, but also sharper and often lighter (katanas are 2h weapons with some actual weight behind them).

Katana are given quite the backlash lately to counter all the hype. Sadly, people are overdoing it a little. Katana were by no means bad swords. They weren't superior to what Europe had, but if they were "bad" swords, then pretty much all European swords made during the Early Middle Ages and before were bad as well, because they were made in a similar fashion.
That's not how it was intended to be used retard. You don't just slam your sword as hard as you can against a big stationary piece of metal. Of course that will be bad for the blade.
The average katana was not very good. One made by a master smith like Kotetsu could hold its own really well.

Europe fought constant wars against different enemies. They had to evolve their weapons in order to survive.
Japan has never been invaded until WW2, which led to people still use poor metal, badly shaped and overweight blades for the longest time. There's really no point in making better weapons if people can't even wear proper armor.

If it was poor metal, then most of what was used during the Early Middle Ages was poor metal too, yet it did its job just fine. Japan had a lot of infighting, and when it comes to warfare people usually abandon what is impractical.

War knife type weapons were also common in Europe. Sabre type weapons have been around since at least the 7th century.
