I don't know actually. I actually didn't particularly like it about halfway through, but I see SAO get shit on by just random people who haven't even watched it nowadays.
It becomes garbage as it goes on, so it couldn't hurt people to just try it out before shitting all over it.
It feels really strange to see SAO get shit on by normal people as well.

The problem lies in the concept in which the main character can't lose and at the same time is the best player in the game. There is no trial only completely devastating everything in his way. His biggest failures are everyone else around him failing.

Because it's got an overall low quality (pacing is terrible, animation isn't exactly fantastic, the story is cliche'd , etc) but it's very popular. Bad things becoming very popular tend to cause long term trends towards bullshit, so people who actually like anime for what it is aren't happy to see something barely breaking the line into mediocrity being one of the most popular anime of the last 10 years.
Something as offensively bland as SAO being as popular as it is doesn't leave a whole lot of room to expect good things from the industry.
