I never understood how it's possible NOT to like Evangelion. The Mechs, Cruel Angel's thesis, fly me to the moon, the lore, the conspiracy, the characters, the art, the editing, Shinji....
I can understand liking it but hating the ending, but not liking it at all?
The first 15 or so episodes are just generic monster-of-the-week battles before the real NGE begins.
Lots of people who like the first part will be disappointed with the end because it doesn't continue in the same vein.
Most people who'd like the second part will never come to enjoy it because they'd have to get through the first part first.
70% of watchers are cut off on the first episode.

from the beginning there was a buildup to a great conspiracy. The angels got stronger and stronger.
The first part was not generic at all. Shinji was very realistic and the characters felt like real human beings. The show masterfully made use of time. The music was superb.
I'd say it was above average, not generic
I'm not saying that there is no foreshadowing for what is to come, I'm saying it's a completely different kind of show.
It's like Zetsuen no Tempest where most people say the second half sucks, and those that don't say the first half sucks.
in every episode, they only spent a few minutes fighting the angels. The rest of the episode was dedicated to the characters. The reason each eva had a 1 minute external battery was for this reason. Each fight felt more realistic and the stakes were high.
to answer op, I think it would have been better to kill toji when the dummy pilot wailed on him, since we don't see him for the rest of the show and that would make shinji's reaction more realistic
I'd say first several episodes are really weak.
The real fun bedgins at the flying tentacle dick, but then we get runaway shinji and more of shit.
To get caught up you need to watch until Ramniel, many might be getting a negative opinion on the show from before the Ramiel.

See, my problem is Evangelion is a character drama. So when the narrative focuses on homosexual undertones, it makes me feel uncomfortable and I don't enjoy watching those moments.
I have no problem with the sexuality of a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, for example. I can appreciate the eroticism of the male form. It's beautiful. But the audience is never made to feel the homosexuality that the characters feel in Evangelion.

The scene isn't necessarily designed to make you feel uncomfortable. I'm sure there are many Eva fans out there who don't mind at all. It simply has a negative effect on me, and I dislike it.

Not everyone needs to like certain shows. /a/ pretty much assumes you love a select set of shows before you even start posting or else you get blasted to heaven. In other words, overrated. It goes for NGE, most works by Nisio, Jojo (of which I'm a huge fan), etc.
There are many problems with the show that make it unwatchable to some. Namely the fact thqt every character is a piece of shit on the inside and that the show makes you wait too long to see the main character shine and the whole coming of age thing is super forced. I could go on

Most of the people who hate it do so because they hate Shinji and are mad that the main character isn't one that they can self insert into.
Quick cuts are a fantastic way to save money on fancy art or even a lot of art.
You can just reuse frames or use half finished frames over and over again, if you're cutting quickly, because nobody will notice or care.

maybe because it wasn't everyone's first anime, let alone their first anime that tries to be deeper or more complex than a typical shounen.
the illusion of character depth falls short when you realize they're the same stereotypes from every other anime with tragic pasts and emotional issues thrown in. it makes them more interesting than a character driven by pure cliche shit, but in they end up predictable and plastic all the same. in fact, at about 2/3 in you can pretty much divide the episodes into "moments", like shinji moments where he doubts himself, etc.., or asuka moments where she freaks out because she couldn't be the very best, like no one ever was. even their internal monologues become repetitive and predictable and that's not good.
the plot itself, the "lore" and "conspiracy' also disappoints because pretty much everything that is built up from the beginning is either left unexplained or dropped to be substituted by more character drama and monologues.
EoE isn't even near a mindfuck, it's just convoluted as hell so it's visually confusing but in terms of psychological exploration of the characters, it hardly adds anything new to the table, it just brings it about in different ways. so again, disappointing.
the soundtrack is nice but the opening gets old fast.
the fanbase is absolute garbage, though that doesn't really affect the show itself.
i like evangelion, but i honestly think both both that it is overrated and that it could have been much better had it not tried to be deeper than it needed to with the exaggerated focus on the psychological aspect.

The lore and conspiracy are the worst parts of Eva. They're messy and poorly executed. They only appear interesting because of the obtuse manner they're presented in.

I mean, that's kind of the point, at least as far as the main cast is concerned. I feel like it would be pretty difficult to portray some of the adult cast in a similar manner though. Ritsuko in particular seems fairly difficult to cage into a particular archetype or cliche. Also, the character's repeating their mistakes over and over again is also important to the central themes as well.

This is true, but somewhat of a moot point. There are no more original stories to tell, no sectors of the mind that have yet to be explored, no truths of our world that have never been discussed. All there is to do now is try to tell those stories and explore those themes over again in a unique and compelling way. This is a problem that all modern stories have.
The rising and falling notes act themselves as metaphors for the show itself.
