The problem is, Japanese animators back then were much more open to outside influences and pop culture from all over the world. Now, the anime industry has become so insular. The only people who take the time to actually make it are the ones who have zero interests outside of it so they just make anime based on their tastes. The industry needs to look outward and open themselves up to more interests than just anime or they'll just continue to stagnate. There are gems and exceptions now. But those are becoming more and more rare.
