Shallow plot (mostly predictable, yes), lots of undeveloped characters, poorly detailed setting, dumbest ending possible, all that cheap gore merely for the sake of teenage-appealing edginess, etc, etc. The only thing that actually felt fresh and memorable among the overall mediocrity was White Chaika's speech and personality, but it didn't save the show.

the plot was indeed simple. I didnt think characters were all that underdeveloped with the screen time they got. who in particular do you think? the main three were obviously pretty well done, red chaikas group couldve gotten some more screen time but you could see a clear progression from when she showed up to the end. the heroes didnt need much, it was more show up, see how they are now and take their shit.
the ending was meh, il give you that. i thought it was ok but couldve been better. It was predictable but oh well.
the gore wasnt bad at all really, i think the most gore was when they were killing gaz in the flash backs and i think part of that is to show it was a big deal and stuck with some of the heros.
i liked how people werent tanking stabs and slashes like in a lot of anime. they got hit with an arrow theyre hurting, that guy who got his hand cutoff was out of the fight then and there. it was a nice change of pace.
we were given enough of the setting to understand the plot and a little more, im fine with that. It didnt go into the backstory of the entire civilization but it didnt need to. it was an interesting setting that i wish wed get more of but it didnt leave too many questions.
Il say it wasnt the best and i can see why some people wouldn't enjoy it but its far from the worst fantasy series ive ever seen.
i may be biased a bit though because magic guns are my fetish and they dont appear in many things.

Eh, the gore was so tame I don't think its even worth mentioning.
I just wish the ending didn't feel so rushed and anticlimactic. We wait the entire ride for the end and all it does is raise more questions and leave more loose ends. The core story was complete, but I feel like there is plenty of room for more.

They're better than the average light novel but it's only been translated to the first chapter of Volume 3. The original translator got pissy when Baka Tsuki wanted to use his translations because he didn't want to be associated with them and he deleted his site.

Chaika isn't autistic, only foolish and naive like any teenage girl. Her speech is due to the fact that the language of the region isn't her first language. Red and White both come from the northern lands where the main language is Laake. In the LN and Manga, she speaks it when she first encounters Toru and when she's imprisoned during the Island arc when talking to the demihuman girl. Of course, the anime couldn't do it because the VAs would have to be fluent in Russian or something for it to be convincing. You can see the runes for Laake here
I'd like to know whether the differences among the Chaikas were just their programming or if parts of their original personalities were still subconsciously there. What were Red and White like before? If Vivi had gone full Chaika, would she still have her poison needle skills? Would she still be in love with Gillette?

They never said that at all. Her memory wipe is a standard part of the Chaika conversion process. The way magic is explained kind of makes it seem like that was a possible reason for her loss of memories prior to a certain point, but that was just build up for when she sacrifices them at the end. Her memories before were lost because they wiped and replaced with the memories of the Chaika template. It says on that page and in the first Volume of the LN that she speaks Laake fluently

They try to cover a volume in about 2 episodes or so. I didn't think the pacing was too bad, I've definitely seen worse. The character moments are what really makes the show. But hey, if you don't like it there's no need for you to force yourself to watch.

really? it was faster paced i think, but not necessarily rushed. Im not seeing where they shouldve slowed down, the jump from arc to arc was sudden but i don't think all of them for the most part were wrapped up nicely. what do you think was rushed about it? It was fast between gaz showing up and him dying but i think thats how it should've been. you don't want to give the big bad time to establish himself if you're the hero.
it wouldve been nice to extend the fight a little, we saw maybe 10 minutes of dragoon toru. Him killing shin that quickly i think was to show he got a "power up" when he made the contract with freddie. everyone else fighting the other chaikas didnt get much screen time. im not sure how i wouldve fixed that.
i think it might be nice to have one of these shows were theres a lot of traveling to have an episode of just traveling. Nothing really exciting happens, just show the normal day to day, focus on character interaction and what not. it might be boring but it would be nice to see whats going on between all the big fights.

The first two episodes with whats her name, the wizard hero, i thought those were well done. getting the remains from that spear guy, and going to the island. the set-up for that wasnt bad. the island was kind of fast, i think it was what two, three episodes? but at no point while watching it did i think to myself i can't follow whats happening or why someone is doing something. Freddie could've been way more badass but in most scenes where shes trying she just fucks shit up. when she got to the island and had her wings cutoff with chaika on her back was pretty weak, but after that she was destroying like everything. during the tournament she was wrecking people. There were times where she got BTFO, S1 where the spider person thing ate her, when she got poisoned by shin. the battle with gaz. overall i think the anime made her look weaker than she actually was.
please don't think im defending this show blindly, i recognize its fault and just want to talk about it. none of my real life friends watch anime.
